Located just minutes away from downtown Aspen, the 160-acre retreat is known as Dunbar Ranch — named after the character Lieutenant John Dunbar in Costner’s movie Dances With Wolves. The ranch is situated in “pristine wilderness with its own private lake and unparalleled views up Independence Pass, over the North Star Nature Preserve along to the east side of Aspen Mountain,” realtor Amy Mottier explains.
Main Lodge
Dunbar Ranch, which Mottier calls “the ultimate luxury retreat,” has three residences. In addition to the main residence, there is a lake house and a river house. All three “offer stunning and comfortable spaces for you and your family to experience the true Colorado lifestyle,” Mottier says. Altogether, there are 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
It’s the main house, however, that is the star attraction. The 5,800-square-foot house has six bedrooms and six bathrooms with “an elegant-rustic aesthetic that matches the wilderness outside,” Architectural Digest notes.
“Exposed wood columns and ceiling beams help to create a cabin-like atmosphere, while high-end materials elevate the aesthetic to something fit for a Hollywood star,” the article continues. The master suite even has a trapdoor that opens to stone steps leading to a private jacuzzi with views of the Continental Divide.
Things To Do
Once you’re at the ranch, there’s plenty to do while taking in the majestic scenery. For instance, in the summer, you can take a walk, run, or bike ride on the numerous trails. You can also spend the day using kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards on the lake, or even fish from the dock. What’s more, since the ranch belongs to Kevin Costner, who has been in several baseball movies, there’s even a baseball field with a view of Independence Pass.
In the winter, given its location, it comes as no surprise that the ranch is a ski lover’s paradise. It has its own sledding hill so you can tube all day as well as at night. Weather permitting, you can also ice fish on the lake and cross-country ski on paved paths around the property. And when the day is done, there — of course — are three hot tubs so you can relax.
What It Costs
By now, you probably have two questions, the first being, “Why isn’t Kevin Costner at his ranch?” The answer is that while Costner does occasionally visit the ranch, he has been spending most of his time on location in Montana filming his TV show Yellowstone.
The next big question — naturally — is, “How much will it cost to rent Dunbar Ranch?” Mottier told TravelAwaits that “If you have an event which comes with a week stay including all three homes, the price is $350,000 plus service fee and tax.”
While the price is steep, Mottier notes that the ranch has “majestic views” of the Continental Divide that make Dunbar Ranch “an amazing venue for corporate events, weddings, and family reunions.”
