11 Delicious Restaurants To Try In Wichita, Kansas

Wichita is gaining a reputation for its delicious food scene, and for good reason. A cultural hub, you can eat around the world through Wichita’s variety of local and international cuisine. From upscale eateries to family restaurants, the food in Wichita is delicious.

With approximately 1,200 restaurants, food trucks, and vendors to choose from, you can find just about any type of food your heart desires in Wichita. It is an excellent opportunity to try something you have never eaten before. From the famous Kansas steaks to barbeque to international dishes, the food scene reflects the population and cultures they represent.  

My husband and I visited Wichita in November, and we were impressed by the restaurants we visited. When you’re in Wichita, check out some of these delicious restaurants. And don’t forget to save room for dessert!

Note: Visit Wichita provided some meals, but all opinions are my own.

1. HomeGrown Wichita 

A daytime eatery with three locations, HomeGrown Wichita uses locally sourced food and serves creative dishes. We ate at the newest downtown location next to Naftzger Park when we visited Wichita. 

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Homegrown. They make the best homemade pop tarts. We tried both the seasonal (lemon) and brown sugar cinnamon flavors as a breakfast appetizer.  

There were so many tasty items on the breakfast menu I had a hard time deciding which to choose. I settled on the blueberry streusel pancakes and a side of bacon. The pancakes were topped with fresh blueberries and a crumbly streusel.

2. Georges French Bistro

An authentic French restaurant that feels warm and friendly, Georges French Bistro provides delicious options for the most discriminating palate.

Enjoy the aroma of French onion soup, steak frites, and escargot as you enter for lunch or dinner. For starters, I recommend the baguette française. It is a toasted baguette served with butter, sundried tomato paste, and orange marmalade.  

As your main entree, consider the trout amandine. They start with a rainbow trout and crust it with almonds and parmesan. It is topped with a lemon beurre blanc and capers.  

I want to try the Lyonnaise-style pork the next time I visit. Schnitzel-style, crispy pork loin topped with a citrus vinaigrette arugula salad sounds delicious to me.  

3. Doma

A new eatery on Douglas Street featuring small bites and a fabulous atmosphere, Doma provides a seasonal menu that is constantly changing. Highlighting bold Asian flavors and traditional Latin recipes, Doma is sure to have something to tickle your tastebuds.

Start your meal with crispy Brussels sprouts or caramel onion and crab dip. Try the Hawaiian marinated vegas strip or the crispy skin Scottish salmon for the main entree. On my next visit to this restaurant, I want to try the brown sugar braised pork belly.  

I recommend adding a happy ending to your meal by ordering the cinnamon sugar sopapillas served with vanilla bean ice cream, spiced honey, and a mixed berry sauce.

4. Public

In the Old Town district, Public showcases farm-to-table offerings. This delightful eatery is adjacent to Old Town’s premier outdoor music venue, Brickyard. It features an eclectic ambiance.

Public serves fresh and regionally sustainable ingredients. Its Wichita-style pan pizzas are crafted on-premises. The crust is made of honey wheat bread and dusted with cornmeal, and then topped generously with the toppings of your choice. 

The restaurant’s menu includes sandwiches, burgers, salad, and pizza. The dinner menu adds entrees such as smoked brisket and the bistro filet.

5. Scotch & Sirloin

If you are hungry for prime rib, Scotch & Sirloin has you covered. This fine-dining restaurant located on East Kellogg Drive is open for lunch and dinner. Scotch & Sirloin has been serving Wichita for 40+ years with a delicious menu.

At the top of my list for appetizers is the beef tenderloin carpaccio. The chef slices tenderloin into thin slices and serves them with capers, shallots, arugula, and truffle oil. When I visit again, I want to try the Sea Hogs: jumbo shrimp bacon-wrapped and grilled, then served with a tomato horseradish sauce.

The Shellfish Bouquet is another fun option, with a half-dozen oysters, cocktail shrimp, and snow crab claws.  

Steak eaters have lots of choices. I recommend the au poivre medallions: seared tenderloin medallions simmered and bathed in a green peppercorn sauce and served with mashed potatoes. 

6. Sabor Latin Bar & Grille

Unique South American dishes are the specialty at Sabor Latin Bar & Grille. The restaurant in Old Town Square offers premium dishes that are sure to tango with your taste buds.  

When we visited, we kicked off our meal with ceviche de camarones. Citrus marinated rock shrimp were tossed with fire-roasted tomatoes, red onions, and avocado. 

My husband ordered the Sabor Seafood Paella. It is a Spanish rice dish that includes mussels, shrimp, calamari, and veggies. I had the Atlantic salmon with a mango sofrito sauce. The churrasco with grilled skirt steak, peppers, onions, mushrooms, corn, black beans, and rice is on my list to try when we return.

7. Chisholm’s

You can’t go wrong with a steak from Chisholm’s American Beef and Ale House.

Located on Airport Road, Chisholm’s honors Kansas’s reputation for innovation, great beef, and the pioneer spirit. Whether you are looking for Heartland comfort food or bold, creative cuisine, you will find the perfect dish on their menu.  

Chisholm’s specializes in innovative beef entrees. The classic ribeye, braised beef short ribs, and filets are just a few examples of the delectable beef selections.

8. Piatto Neapolitan Pizza

If you’re hungry for authentic Italian pizza, Piatto Neapolitan Pizza will put a smile on your face. Owner Robert McMullin trained in Naples and brought his expertise, and a custom oven, from Italy to Wichita.

Every pizza at this East Douglas Avenue restaurant is created from scratch with the freshest ingredients. It is made with passion, using more than 300 years of Italian technique and tradition.  

A favorite here is the Francesca. The crushed pistachios give this pizza a unique taste.

9. Cafe Bel Ami

If you are in the mood for French Mediterranean cuisine, Cafe Bel Ami will be the perfect dining option. Locals rave about the food and the service.  

When we visited, we found the decor and atmosphere to be warm, and the servers were professional and attentive. The menu had a vast selection of intriguing food and delicious options.

I ordered the Bal Ami Trio, which included a beef medallion, chicken breast, and jumbo shrimp with a peppercorn sauce drizzled over it. My husband ordered filet au poivre: an eight-ounce center-cut tenderloin with a five-pepper sauce. Both were delicious and cooked to perfection. 

10. Prost

A husband and wife–owned restaurant, Prost is known for its superb, authentic German cuisine.

Head to Prost on East Central Street for the best German food in Wichita! This urban biergarten serves authentic German flavor and sports local Wichita character. 

Try the Schupfnudeln, an interesting dish of finger-shaped noodles formed with mashed potatoes and pan-fried. It is served with sauerkraut. Another fun dish is the Zigeuner Schnitzel, a breaded and fried pork cutlet topped with tomato. It is served with pepper and onion gravy along with Pommes (fries) and a house salad.

Save room for Apfelstrudel for dessert. The traditional Viennese pastry is filled with apples, raisins, sugar, and cinnamon and topped with vanilla ice cream.

Don’t forget to have a glass of German bier! (That’s beer.)

11. Sweet Allie B’s

For a quick soup, salad, or sandwich, visit Sweet Allie B’s. We stopped for lunch, and I ordered the oriental chicken salad, and my husband ordered the French dip. Both were fresh and delicious. They also had yummy baked goods available.

Nifty Nut House

If you need something to snack on or a treat to take home, check out the Nifty Nut House. It is the largest nut and candy store I have ever visited. Every kind of nut imaginable is in this store, and all types of candy. We stocked up on nuts during our visit.

Cocoa Dolce Chocolate Lounge

What would life be like without chocolate? Visit the Cocoa Dolce Chocolate Lounge on North St. Francis for a decadent treat. They have an extensive line of assorted chocolates, specialty coffee drinks, pastries, craft beer, and cocktails.

When we visited, I purchased the Champagne chocolate truffles. The delicious, smooth, and creamy treats sprinkled with sugar didn’t last long. 

Make Time To Dine In Wichita
