If you’re looking for paradise, you’ll find it on Maui. It’s the second-largest Hawaiian island, and it truly has something for everyone: pristine beaches, awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets from the top of Mount Haleakala, some of the world’s best whale watching, delicious farm-to-table cuisine, and fantastic hiking trails. And that’s just the tip of the volcano.

And now is a great time to visit Hawaii. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s governor asked out-of-state residents to please refrain from traveling to Hawaii and required long quarantines for those that did so. It had some of the strictest testing protocols of any domestic destination — which proved to be logistically tricky for many visitors.
But as of this spring, much of those requirements have been relaxed.
If you’re planning a getaway to Maui, you have a large selection of accommodations available at your fingertips. Hotels and resorts run the gamut from budget lodging to five star, luxury enclaves. But many visitors find they appreciate the convenience of a Maui vacation rental — where they can prepare their own meals and get away from the crowds.
With that in mind, we’ve picked out some of our top Vrbo vacation rentals on Maui. Tough assignment, right? We cross-referenced listings with custom reviews to find our favorites. Just pack a swimsuit and prepare for departure. Not a fan of VRBOs? Here are some Maui hotels for families.
Hana Bay Oceanfront Manini Cottage$595/nightly avg
If you want some room to stretch your legs, check out the beautiful Manini Cottage. This oceanfront cottage is nestled upon the gorgeous bluffs above Hana Bay. The owners say this property is completely renovated and includes a full kitchen with all new appliances.
The glass-wall shower is perfect for a relaxing post-swim shower, and we can totally picture ourselves enjoying a homemade meal on the covered Ipe ocean deck. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely evening in one of the outdoor hanging chairs.
You can’t beat the location, either. Guests can walk to nearby Hana Bay Beach Park or Waikaloa Black Sand Beach — both are about 5 minutes away. You can also walk to nearby Hana Town to check out local food trucks.
Ka’anapali Cottage$550/nightly avg
If you like being in the center of it all, check out this luxurious private cottage in the heart of the Ka’anapali resort area in Lahaina. This property seems to have everything — including a fully appointed kitchen, bright bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, and Roku smart TVs in every room.
If you’re feeling beachy, good news: Kahekili Beach is just across the street! You’ll find dining, gear rental, and golf all just a few steps away.
There are two heated community pools on property, and the Ka’anapali Resort, where you’ll find shopping and fine dining, is just a short drive away.
Hamoa Beach Plantation House Hale Ulu Lulu$395/nightly avg
If you want a truly unique experience, don’t miss this gorgeous blast from the past. The owners describe this house rental as an authentic, meticulously renovated sugar cane plantation owner’s home in Hana.
This home, built in 1900, underwent a significant rebuild in 2005. It has been completely restored with special care taken to maintain historical details — but it’s also updated with modern amenities. The decor has a distinctly vintage Hawaiian vibe, and we can easily picture ourselves enjoying a mai tai while taking in the ocean views.
The home is situated on a lush 2-acre property, close to beaches and a natural pool, and just 3 miles south of Hana Town.
Akela at Ho’olei$3,798/nightly avg
So, let’s get the obvious thing out of the way first: This breathtaking villa is definitely what we’d call an “aspirational” destination. If budget isn’t a concern, this could very much be your speed.
Akela at Ho’olei is part of a gated community in Wailea — a tony, upscale area of Maui where you’ll also find some of the island’s most luxurious resorts. In fact, if you stay here, access to the nearby Grand Wailea Resort is included, complete with its pools, water slides, a spa, and restaurants. If you call the front desk, they’ll even come pick you up! Round-trip resort transfers are included in your nightly rate. Talk about a great location!
But back to the villa: You’ll enjoy panoramic ocean views, a gorgeous lanai to watch the sunset, and even a chef-grade outdoor kitchen.
There’s a one-car garage with elevator access — especially convenient if stairs are difficult for anyone in your party. Even though no one enjoys doing laundry on vacation, you’ll appreciate the washer and dryer on the premises.
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything from a wok to a waffle maker. And if you don’t feel like cooking, just call the concierge staff to arrange a personal chef to prepare a special meal in your villa. Sounds like paradise to us.
Kihei Garden Cottage$706/nightly avg
Just up the road from Wailea, you’ll find this lovely cottage in Kihei. It’s definitely a more laid-back vibe than Wailea, but the South Shore beaches are just as beautiful.
This is the perfect home base for a solo traveler or couple wanting quiet privacy and relaxing outdoor space. Guests can enjoy a private saltwater hot tub, perfect after a long day at the beach. Speaking of which, this property is conveniently located near the gorgeous Kama’ole beaches in South Kihei, perfect for snorkeling.
And you can feel good about your stay, too: This is a green energy home that uses solar power. Who says it’s not easy being green?
Hoolei 81-3$1,095/nightly avg
If a luxurious villa is more your speed, but you don’t have thousands of dollars to spend per night, take a look at this rental. This property offers breathtaking views and comes with personalized concierge services, professional cleaning services, and a grocery delivery service (note that a service fee is included).
This property is part of a larger development, which means you’ll have a pool, two jacuzzis, a full gym, and a locker room available for use.
The Hoolei 81-3 unit comes with a beautiful lanai that includes an outdoor dining area for eight and a separate lounge area for four. We are already daydreaming about grilling our catch of the day while enjoying a chilled glass of prosecco and admiring the sunset.
Honu’ea Cottage$425/nightly avg
This romantic cottage is named for the endangered Hawksbill turtles (Honu’ea) that nest on the shores near the property. How cool is that?
You know what else is cool? The unobstructed ocean views you’ll enjoy from this perfect location. The owners say the sandy beach is just steps from the front door. You’re also just a short walk from local restaurants, grocery stores, and shops. But if staying in is more your speed, you can enjoy meals on the spacious lanai. We think this cozy cottage would be perfect for solo travelers or a couple wanting to explore Maui’s lush south shore.
Kula Villa$421/nightly avg
If you want a unique stay, look no further than this upcountry hideaway. This private residence sits on 33 acres and boasts beautiful ocean, island, and mountain views. You’ll definitely feel the Hawaiian vibes with the lava rock construction, Kiawe tree columns, and bamboo-covered ceilings.
The location is special, too — just 5 minutes from the popular Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm. Regardless of where you stay, consider adding this attraction to your must-see list.
Ocean View Villa$420/nightly avg
We love this beachfront rental for its modern aesthetic. One reviewer called it “pretty much perfect,” and we can see why. It’s part of a small community called Villas By The Cove, and it’s just a few steps from beautiful beaches.
You’ll have a shared pool and access to beach chairs, boogie boards, and gas barbecue grills. If you feel like exploring, you’ll find excellent restaurants, grocery stores, farmers markets, shopping, and even whale watching a short walk away.
Kapalua Bay Villa$478.95/nightly avg
Make yourself right at home in West Maui at this beautiful villa — its name means “arms embracing the sea.” You’ll enjoy picturesque views from this second-level unit, which comes with not one but two patios to enjoy those famous Maui sunsets.
You’ll be just steps away from Oneloa Beach at this property, with several other beaches on Napili Bay and Kapalua Bay all within walking distance. This unit is part of an upscale gated community with easy access to hiking trails and three swimming pools. And if you love golf, great news: You’re also close to championship golf courses.
