Now, this is a different approach to exploring South Africa! Not having been on an African safari, I don’t have a lot to compare it to. But I’m intrigued by the fact that Collette has added small group safaris featuring multiple forms of transportation. You can get to new places and see more, right?

Focus On Transportation
Collette’s customers have asked for more small-group safari tours, and the company has produced some intriguing options in response. You can now book tours like “Wilderness of Southern Africa: Safari by Land & Water.” This small group experience focuses on unique modes of transportation, and it’s just one of many offered by Collette.
“The new safari goes well beyond the typical southern Africa game drive. You’ll climb into a 4×4 and go on seven land game drives, but that’s not all. You’ll travel on a private, luxury safari boat and some smaller tender boats, and you can take a game walk in search of the wildlife in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa.”
What Do I Need To Know?
The 15-day tour begins at $5,699 per person. Its first departure in May 2023 will cap at 24 travelers so each person has a deeper, more meaningful experience. The focus is on the wilderness and cultural aspects of southern Africa.
In addition to the search for the big five game animals (lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, African elephants, and rhinos), travelers can expect to visit Victoria Falls, take part in a simple, traditional meal with locals during a home-hosted lunch, drive down countryside roads not frequented by other travelers, and visit an elephant sanctuary.
Pro Tip: The activity level for this tour is four out of four. This means you lead an active life at home, and a few thousand steps a day isn’t out of the norm. Also, you can handle longer walking tours (more than 90 minutes) on uneven terrain. This trip is not appropriate for people who use wheelchairs or walkers.
What’s Included And What’s Optional?
In addition to visiting Victoria Falls, you’ll search for the big five in Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park. Enjoy a three-night cruise on a privately-chartered safari boat on Lake Kariba, and eat an al fresco dinner on the banks of the Zambezi.
Your 15-day, 14-night southern Africa experience will include 33 meals (13 breakfasts, 10 lunches, and 10 dinners). Optional excursions include a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River for $75 per person. You can also extend your tour with a four-night visit to Cape Town for $999 per person.
Where Else Are These Unique Tours Offered?
Collette’s small group tours use unique modes of transportation to take travelers to the heart of a destination. You can travel like a local in Bangkok — through the streets in a tuk-tuk. Cruise in a vintage taxicab in Dublin, float down the canals of Venice in a gondola, see Lisbon in a private tram, or experience the thrill of Montana’s Flathead River in a white water raft.
Pro Tip: As with most things today, it’s best to prepare for the unexpected. Travel insurance is a must. One of the best insurers is Medjet Assist. Colette also offers a travel protection plan. It offers a full money-back refund if you need to cancel — up to 24 hours before departure.
