Grab your winter hat and gloves (and a big hot chocolate)! The Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train is coming back after a three-year hiatus. As in previous years, the CP Holiday Train, with its festive lights and live music, will raise money for food banks in the communities along its route. The 1,000-foot train has 14 brightly-decorated cars.

“I’m grateful to the CP team members who adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver two exceptional virtual holiday train shows and to all those who continued to donate while we kept community members safe,” said Keith Creel, CP’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The holiday train is all about families and communities coming together to celebrate the season and help those in need.”
Pro Tip: Take something to sit on!
The Holiday Train
The holiday train is a harbinger of Christmas joy. It’s also a godsend for those who are hungry. There are plenty who go without during the holiday.
Although holiday train shows are free, CP asks attendees for cash donations or non-perishable food. Food pantries from the community will set up a station for your donations. All such contributions stay with local food banks and help hungry community members.
The holiday train program began in 1999. Since then, it has raised about $21 million to help local communities. In addition, the holiday train has collected about five million pounds of food.
When Will It Come To My Town?
CP’s two holiday trains are scheduled to visit many locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Canadian train stays in Canada. The U.S. train travels between Canada and the U.S.
The 2022 tour begins on November 23, when the holiday train pulls up to its first-ever appearance in Maine (Jackman, Brownville Junction, and Hermon). Also for the first time, the holiday train will host shows on November 24 in Lac-Megantic, Sherbrooke, and Farnham, Quebec. These are the first Canadian stops of 2022.
Beginning on November 22, you can check the CP Holiday Train Tracker to see where the trains are and get updates as they travel throughout Canada and the U.S. Sound familiar? It’s a bit like following Santa’s ride from the North Pole!
U.S. Routes
The U.S. Holiday Train leaves from Montreal on November 22. U.S. shows begin on the 23rd, passing through eight states: Maine, New York, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Iowa.
The train’s journey will end in Saskatchewan, Canada, on December 18, after leaving Kenmare, North Dakota, on December 17.
