As a native Texan, I have surprised my husband with numerous romantic weekend getaways in our home state. We love connecting over a romantic dinner, admiring fine art at museums, or just lounging around in a great hotel being pampered all weekend. With that in mind, pack your bags and grab your sweetie and head out to one of our favorite cities in Texas for a romantic weekend. I think you will be glad you did!
1. Fort Worth
One of our favorite romantic getaways in Texas is our hometown, Fort Worth. Now, I know that most people associate Fort Worth with cowboys and cattle drives, and while all of that is great, Fort Worth really does have a softer, more romantic side as well.
If you and your sweetie like to admire artwork, then plan a visit to the Kimbell Art Museum. The Kimbell has a wonderful permanent collection of art and is continually bringing in new, rotating exhibits. For evening plans, you can visit the Sundance Square area for a great dinner and a night out. Sundance Square has everything from comedy clubs to jazz bars, which makes it a great place to plan an evening out.
When you’re ready to call it a day, Fort Worth offers up some fabulous luxury hotels as well. The Hotel Drover, located in the Fort Worth Stockyards, is known for its “rustic luxury” and impeccable service. If you want to stay near Sundance Square and Downtown Fort Worth, then the Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth and the Omni Hotel are both excellent choices.
Pro Tip: Fort Worth has so many great neighborhoods, each with its own distinct personality. Some popular ones to visit are West 7th, Sundance Square, Near Southside, and the Magnolia District.
2. Georgetown
The charming city of Georgetown, Texas is a hidden gem in the Texas Hill Country and a fabulous destination for a romantic escape. Known for having “The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” Georgetown offers visitors a plethora of outdoor activities, wineries, and fun entertainment choices.
For a unique date, take your loved one to Sweet Eats Fruit Farm and spend some time picking strawberries or fresh peaches together. You can then combine your freshly picked fruit with some bread and cheese and have a picnic at Georgetown’s Blue Hole Park. Blue Hole Park offers visitors a place to swim, kayak, fish, or just enjoy a lazy day by the water.
When you’re ready for an evening outing, head to Georgetown’s historic square to enjoy a little shopping before having a glass of wine at the Georgetown Winery. To top the evening off, watch a live performance at the Georgetown Palace Theatre before enjoying a nice stay at the Sheraton Austin Georgetown Hotel.
3. San Antonio
San Antonio tops the list for date-worthy experiences in Texas and is one of my favorite cities to visit on a romantic weekend. First things first: You have to book a hotel overlooking the San Antonio River Walk. There is just something about being by the water and watching the couples stroll hand in hand down the River Walk that screams romance. My personal favorites are the Omni La Mansion del Rio and the Mokara Hotel and Spa.
For a romantic brunch or lunch, head outdoors to the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and dine at Jardin before exploring the beauty of the gardens together. History lovers will be in heaven exploring the mission along San Antonio’s Mission Trail. To make this extra romantic, consider biking the trail as your travel from one mission to the next. If shopping and food are your idea of a great day, then you will want to visit the Pearl District in San Antonio. This trendy area is known for the fabulous restaurants, bars, and boutique shops that call it home.
When night sets in, be sure that you spend some time walking around downtown San Antonio. The lights on the River Walk set the scene for a romantic stroll and seeing the San Fernando Cathedral aglow is truly a remarkable sight. Make your way down to Market Square and spend the evening sipping margaritas and dancing to mariachi bands to top off the night.
Pro Tip: The River Walk gets extremely crowded on the weekends. For the best experience, consider visiting during the week if possible.
4. Galveston Island
For many, the definition of romance is a beachside getaway. If that is true for you, then you will want to take your significant other to Galveston Island. Galveston offers visitors a nice mix of history, great food and cocktails, and loads of beachside fun.
Spend the day walking with your loved one down one of Gulf Coast beaches, cozy up on a beach chair, or set sail on a sunset dinner cruise — the choice is yours in Galveston. In addition to the beach and water activities, Galveston also offers up several historical experiences. Visitors can tour the Moody Mansion or visit the Historic Galveston Strand for some fun dining, shopping, and nightlife.
For a special surprise, take your loved one to the rooftop bar at The Tremont House Hotel. The Tremont House Rooftop Bar serves up craft cocktails and delicious bites to guests as they enjoy fabulous views of downtown and the Galveston Harbor. Not only is their rooftop bar great, but the Tremont House is also a romantic historic hotel in Galveston, perfect for your weekend getaway.
Pro tip: Galveston has loads of seaside restaurants that are great for a romantic meal overlooking the water!
5. Wimberley
If you want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big cities on your couple’s getaway, then find yourself a cozy cabin in Wimberley, Texas. This small city in the Texas Hill Country makes for an amazing weekend escape thanks to the small-town charm of the artistic community. Cozy cabins and art aren’t the only things that Wimberley has to offer though. This town also boasts some fun, adrenaline-pumping activities and some great wineries and distilleries to keep you busy.
Adrenaline-seeking couples will love jumping into Wimberley’s Jacob’s Well, a popular swimming hole that is also the second-largest fully submerged cave in Texas. If the weather isn’t right for swimming, then consider gliding through the trees on a zipline with Wimberley Zipline Adventures.
Couples that want a more relaxing weekend will love unwinding at Wimberley Valley Winery. You can enjoy a bottle of wine under one of the large oak trees on the property and feel as if you have the whole place to yourselves thanks to the expansive property of the winery. When you’re feeling hungry, be sure to enjoy a romantic dinner at The Leaning Pear whose menu changes seasonally.
Pro tip: If you can plan your romantic getaway during the holiday season, Wimberley has a great Trail of Lights that you can add to your itinerary.
6. Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg, Texas, is the perfect place for a romantic getaway in Texas. When you combine the charming German heritage of the city with the plethora of wineries and great outdoor activities, Fredericksburg has something for everyone.
Renting one of the romantic cabins in Fredericksburg (especially one with a hot tub) will definitely set the tone for a romantic getaway. Luckily, there are numerous bed and breakfast accommodations available in Fredericksburg, so finding the perfect one is easy.
When you are ready to start exploring, enjoy some shopping on Fredericksburg’s Main Street before heading out to the many wineries that line Highway 290 in Fredericksburg. For those of you that like outdoorsy dates, then hit the trails at Enchanted Rock State Park or enjoy the wildflowers at Lyndon B. Johnson National Park.
Pro Tip: If you are planning to visit several of the wineries in Fredericksburg, then consider buying a day pass for the 290 Wine Shuttle, a hop-on, hop-off wine shuttle.
7. Austin
Believe it or not, the “Live Music Capital of the World” is also a fabulous Texas city for a romantic weekend. Austin offers couples loads of outdoor activities, fabulous luxury hotels, and world-class dining that is sure to please.
Couples can enjoy kayaking or paddle boating on Lady Bird Lake before strolling hand in hand on South Congress Avenue for some vintage window shopping. At night, you can enjoy a candlelit meal at one of the many Austin restaurants or cuddle up at the Blue Starlite Drive-In Theater.
For the ultimate romantic escape, book a few nights at one of the luxury resorts around Austin. I personally love the Omni Barton Creek Resort. The resort is located on 4,000 acres, so you feel as if you have completely escaped the city when you visit. During your stay, you can enjoy luxurious spa treatments, incredible food, and plush amenities. You and your loved one will be feeling spoiled and loved in no time when you stay at the Omni Barton Creek!
Pro Tip: For the ultimate romantic getaway in Austin, be sure to schedule plenty of spa treatments during your time at Barton Creek Resort. It truly is the ultimate in relaxation!
8. Port Aransas
It is easy to have a romantic getaway when you visit the seaside community of Port Aransas, Texas. Offering up long stretches of sandy beaches, a small-town vibe, and some great vacation rentals, it’s easy to see why couples flock to Port Aransas. Port Aransas has incredible bird-watching areas, a fun winery, and loads of water activities to offer guests.
Couples that like adventure will have plenty of things to do in Port Aransas. You can enjoy going on a deep-sea fishing trip or kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico during your stay. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, then just enjoy a relaxing day on the beach before heading out to a great seafood dinner in town.
Pro Tip: Port Aransas is a popular destination for family vacations during the summer. To make this a truly romantic getaway, consider visiting in the off-season when there are fewer families in town.
