The data is in—and it might be a little surprising for anyone who enjoys a classic, cool-weather Thanksgiving experience.

According to studies from Google and Wallethub, Florida is one of the top options for Americans traveling for Thanksgiving.
As someone who regularly writes about the wonders of autumn foliage and quaint small towns, this news was a bit of a shock.
Google’s data study on holiday flight shopping revealed Orlando to be the most-researched destination for Thanksgiving travels. Miami came in 6th place on the list—which is a global ranking, I should add.
Meanwhile, Wallethub’s study ranked Orlando in 2nd place for most sought-out Thanksgiving destinations. Tampa was ranked 6th on the list, followed by Miami in 10th.
So, what’s behind those unique rankings? How did Florida—the US’s most tropical continental location—end up so popular for autumn holiday travelers? And, most importantly, are you missing out if you haven’t been to Florida over Thanksgiving?
Let’s find out.
Why Florida became a top Thanksgiving destination
Reason #1: Fair-weather holidays
The first answer to any question involving ‘Why Florida’ has one immediate, universal answer: the weather.
While Florida faces increasingly scorching temperatures during summer, they drop to around 75-80 degrees during the latter half of November. That means temperatures are ideal for a Thanksgiving holiday spent outdoors.
This is a seriously attractive consideration for those who live in more northern climates where temperatures start to plummet as early as late August or September.
While not everyone can make a full-time move to Florida, they can at least make a timely escape during Thanksgiving—usually with loved ones in tow.
Reason #2: And don’t forget the beach
Sunshine and warm weather aside, let’s not forget the Sunshine State’s nearly 1,500 miles of coastline. It’s not just a place where families can soak up a little bit of sunlight.
They can spend meaningful time on the beach, whether relaxing with some snacks or getting out on the water to kayak or paddleboard.
You know how some families really love turkey trots? Florida also offers tons of outlets for more sporty and outdoorsy families that want to extend their summer vacations with a trip down south.
Reason #3: Fanfare galore
My research has led me to another semi-surprising conclusion about Thanksgiving in Florida (and other warm destinations)—the fanfare is usually top-tier because the weather ‘doesn’t match’.
In other words, most Americans are used to crisp fall weather as they’re dressing their turkeys. Areas without those lower temps and changing leaves tend to go above and beyond to curate a feeling of festivity.
That’s doubly true in Orlando, home to Disney World and Universal Studios. They offer non-stop Thanksgiving parades and activities, most of which offer something for both children and adults.
Reason #4: Family-friendly atmosphere & amenities
That leads me to my next point: Florida is one of the most family-friendly states in the US.
Even its boutique hotels usually offer something for the kiddos—including hotels that are well beyond the bounds of Orlando. That type of atmosphere is incredibly appealing for families who want to get even more out of their holiday this year.
But I think the real secret ingredient is that parents can more or less take a load off.
Sure, planning a Thanksgiving trip to Florida isn’t a breeze by any stretch—but with so many optional activities baked into the agenda (from Thanksgiving buffets to parades), they don’t need to worry about curating a Thanksgiving atmosphere for their children. It’s already there—wrapped and ready to go.
In summary: Florida is warm, its ready to host families, and the state goes hard with its Thanksgiving spirit.
