Thailand-based Aussie Michael Cullen's first career saw him working in hospitality, from vice royal households to boutique and big brand hotels across Australia. New assignments and challenges were welcomed with open arms. He takes that same openness, enthusiasm, and eye for detail into his freelance travel writing.
Asia always beckoned, be that backpacking from Hong Kong into Southern China's Guangzhou in the 80s, a north-to-south honeymoon tour of Vietnam in the 90s (well before mass tourism), Lombok touring, Cambodian explorations, or boating around the little-visited Andaman Islands of India.
Michael and his long-time Aussie bride Vivien moved to Thailand full-time in 2015. He describes their new life as 'retired' to explore new adventures, and they grab every opportunity to discover their South East Asian neighborhood.
The region's culture, people, history, and food inspire Michael to keep traveling and sharing his experiences. Hotel lodging with strong design aesthetics, sustainable and eco-friendly travel, community-based tourism, and wellness are all continuing areas of interest.
